The first week they write in all the D's, and the piano players practice a hand exercise to go with it.
This exercise, known as "Dipping Donuts," requires shaping the 1 and 3 fingers into a round hole like a donut, then pretending to "dip" it into an imaginary glass of milk, using a smooth wrist action. So, all week long at home, they start their piano practice time by "dipping donuts" on all the D's. First one hand, then the other , strikes each D on the piano, from left to right, then back down again right to left or the other way around -- some free spirit always wants to do it backwards, and it really doesn't matter!
This reinforces not just the piano key's location and name, but also a flexible wrist motion. I frequently have to remind them not to stiff-handedly "splash" the donut into the milk, but gracefully bend the wrist.
Over a period of weeks and months of follow-up , it starts to become natural! This final keyboard, below, is very sharp-looking , but I don't use it much because I try to avoid print jobs that demand lots of heavy black ink! Your own purposes may have a special use for this graphic, though:.
It's obvious why piano players need to start learning the names of the keys, but why guitarists and other instrumentalists, and vocalists? Those musicians also need to understand the topography of the piano keyboard, on which there seem to be black notes "missing" between the frets B and C, and E and F.
How else will they truly understand the concept of half steps and whole steps? When I give blank piano keys sheets to guitar beginners , the first thing we do is learn where the guitar strings are located on the piano. We highlight those keys on the keyboard sheet, and use them as a reference for learning how to tune their guitar to a piano. Then, we use this online piano keyboard sheet as a reference for saying note names as they play scales fret-by-fret from string to string.
Open A, A , etc. The black keys always require a lot of ink, and so these paper keyboards are precious commodities once they are printed out! I don't pass out new ones. If a student rips the holes so the keyboard sheet doesn't stay in their 3-ring binder, then I mend the edge with wide tape folded over, and punch new holes! A plain paper blank piano keyboard sheet is one of the best all-around tools a music teacher has!

How Guitar Lessons Work. A basic guitar lesson will look something like this: Select a teacher: A teacher, either in someone's local community or a friend who is able to teach guitar, gets connected with a prospective student. Schedule a time to meet: That teacher and student find a common time and location to meet for a "guitar lesson" The student is taught: During the guitar lesson the teacher shows the student different aspects of the guitar and how to play certain things, depending on their skill level.
The teacher is paid: Once the lesson is complete - usually after 30 minutes to an hour - the student pays the teacher for their time and the next lesson is scheduled. How Online Guitar Lessons Work. Online guitar lessons are essentially the same principle, but where the lessons take place via one of two methods: Pre-recorded video or streaming: Students watch lessons in a Netflix-style streaming setup most common.
Via video conferencing: With something like Skype, a student learns from a teacher in real-time, but remotely over a computer.

So here I am. I learned so many song with you, your play and you voice are also so great and sometimes I just sit there and listen to you.
Hi Antoine, thank you for taking the time to place a nice comment. Thank you very much for your time and expertise. Your lessons are so positive and inspiring that I immediately believe in myself. I wish you further achievements. Greetings Alan: I just discovered your site and I am most impressed.
I tried to create a Fingerstyle Guitar tutorial a couple of years ago in an attempt to give back to the internet community. My meager effort is nowhere close to your wonderful products. Very nicely done. It appears that one of the tools you may be using is OnSong. I would be most interested in purchasing several if they were available.
Warmest regards, John. Hi John, thank you for your kind words. I have never heard of OnSong. I create all the graphics using Adobe Photoshop then add them a frame at a time to the raw footage using Adobe Premier Elements.
As far as I know I cannot offer videos for sale due to copyright restrictions I do not own the rights to any of the songs I cover but I would be happy to if I could. Hi Alan Thank you for your prompt reply. OnSong can be found in the Apple App Store. I have been transferring my paper music to my iPad.
They provide several ways of importing your music, through iTunes, PDF, Word documents, keyboard etc. I have no affiliation with the developers, but it is a very nice program. I was hoping I could save some typing time by downloading your music PDF, not the video, into their program. Best Regards, John. You covered two of my all time favorites. Cheers Ed, thank you for your support its greatly appreciated.
Hello Alan! Thanks so much for the great teacher job! Your website is very helps for me. Thanks to you for your time and video courses. My best wishes from Russia! I think you are very gifted. I have asked you to do something before and I hate to bug you again, but I really think it would be something you would like too.
There is a song that I, as a super beginner, would love to work on. It is very catchy and something that requires more understanding that I have. If you get a chance to check it out, I am sure you will find it worthy of working on.
Thank you again for all your hard work, we do appreciate you. And contents in your webside are awesome and well-arranged, too. Please keep on doing your great job Hello Alan, I just wanted to join the club of enthusiastic replies and thank you a lot for your guitar lessons! They helped me so much. Last year I was seriously ill and picked up guitar playing after many years again and it helped me through the treatments and this year I am fine again. I wanted to let you know how much energy and joy come from your videos.
Cheers from Germany — Corinna. Hi Corinna, thank you for your very kind comment and your kind donation. Hi Karel, thank you again for your kind support.
Unfortunately, because I did not use one to learn it I have never created a song sheet for Tears In Heaven. You hear this probably a lot, but i like to repeat it: it is a great website and a great initiative. Further I would like to share some possible songs you might want to tutor? They are just some possible ideas I would like to share. I still have not learned a lot of great songs which you already made a lesson for, so for the time being I have a lot of work to do ;-.
This sounds simple, chords are simple, but there is a degree of subtelty in there I am missing but is right up your street.
Alan, great work! One of the greatest Canadian Bands! Thank you Michael your support is greatly appreciated, you are living proof that you are never too old to learn. I wish I was as dedicated as you are now when I was younger. Your tutorials are awesome! Hey Alan, I wanna thank you for all the time and all the energy you spend to make those tutos, and then share them freely with us. Thank you for contributing in making this world beautiful. Cheers from Morocco.
Hi Mr. Alan, Nice to meet you, i am from Vietnam, i love to see your video and thank you for all you have done. I learned so much from your video. I want to buy Addario string to support for your website, but i cannot find the way to buy it, or can you ship it to my country? How can i talk to you? If you are interested in me, you can contact me via email or talk via skype: trungphungduc.
Love to talk to you. Wish you all the best. How are you doing? Just looked through the responses — it felt good not to be alone, in that there are other folk who also struggle with learning their chosen instrument. Two strategies that I have adopted maybe it may help one of your students are:- 1 enjoy the struggle — not too sure just how that is possible.
It takes me goes — to get a recognisable similarity to a piece I am trying to replicate. But as for breaking the ice in a finger picking riff, I have passed the goes mark, on the one piece I have chosen. For me — fingerpicking is just like dragging your nails down a black board — gives me that reaction. I break it down into units of five complete goes. Then draw a circle on the page and put a tick in it — 5 goes done.
I do not know what motivates a great teacher, but from the feedbacks you certainly have the gift. It sounds a bit boring but a few minutes a day of repetition will yield results, you just have to be disciplined about it. Hi Peter Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts.
But the pain and frustration is well worth it and a focussed, systematic approach will yield results nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Best wishes with your playing. The only rather difficult part for me is to get the good rythm.
Stroking is still very confusing for the beginner I am. Thanks for some more help. Hi Alan Have just picked up the guitar again, tried to play it 20 years ago but gave up! Could do the basic chords, but never understood the strumming side — could not quite work it out. I love the fact that your tutorials explain the way a song should be strummed! I have suddenly got my enthusiasm back and thanks to your videos, feel like maybe I can actually play a whole song and start to improve.
Thanks for taking the time to care about the newbies out there. All the best Tony. Hi Tony I am glad my videos are helping you. My English is not so good. Current try to learn acoustic guitar from your videos and I must admit am realized struggling with the chord change I cant seen to place all my fingers on the fret at once I can only do it one at a time.
Any tips to help me with this? Hi Robert, when learning new chord changes I follow an exercise where I spend a couple of minutes at a time changing from one to the another at different speeds say D to G , slowing down and speeding up until the action is smooth.
Hey Alan. And rock on!!!!! Thanks to your videos I learned to play the guitar over the past year. Thank you for putting so much work into these so you can share them with the world! Hi Phill Patience is the key to learning the guitar, try working on a few songs at a time for about 10 — 15 minutes each to reduce initial frustration.
Trust me, you are never too old to start to learn playing and, in my experience, us older students tend to be more dedicated in the long run.
Hi Alan, I just recently discovered your tutorials and have really enjoyed them so far. Probably the best tutorials I have seen on the Internet.
It is a song I have always wanted to learn, and your tutorial looks like one I could master. I for one find it a little easier to learn songs with a song sheet, and I know that you post songsheets on your site for the videos you create. If possible, could you please reply and tell me if it is possible to access a songsheet for your tutorial for Wake Me Up Thanks!!!
I am so sorry! Sorry to cause you the trouble. Thank you so much for the effort you put into your website and youtube account. Your tutorials are truely well done and became the primary ressource for me to work on new songs. One big asset your videos have for me is to show the strumming pattern which should be used although I sometimes have a hard time trying to see when to skip some strumming to match what you do.
Hi Yann, Thank you for your positive feedback. Good on ya! I am learning a lot from your tutorials. I want to thank you personally for helping me become a happy guitarist. Will look at some others. I would make a small donation, but have been having major problems with making payments with Paypal, nightmare logging in, not easy to contact them for help, have given up on them really.
Have done a like on FB, and will try to use the music shop. What if we start with G or D. What chord are needed? Can u plain both? Thank u. Hi Trip Thanks for your kind words of support — they are greatly appreciated.
All the graphics are added to the recorded footage a frame at a time using Adobe Premiere Elements so it is pretty time consuming but the most accurate method I could come up with. It really is the best tuition site of all I have looked at by a long way. I was just wondering if you have a place on your site where the chords and lyrics could be printed out so that I know where the chord changes are in relation to the lyrics. This would enable me to practice away from the computer.
Please keep this amazing site going and let me know where I can contribute to it. Regards, Gary. Hi Gary. I am glad you find my site useful. Unfortunately, due to the nature of WordPress and copyright issues I cannot add songsheets in a downloadable form but I can email you some as an attachment for you to print out at your leisure. Drop me an email and let me know what you want. Contributions to the administration of this site can be made through the Donate button or section of this site.
Hi Alan, and thanks for the great site! You show it and you sing it fantastically , and then I can take it from there, as many times as I need. So cool. Keep up the amazing work. My guitar playing has improved a lot since I discovered your site. Hi Alan might have already asked this but been trying to work out smokey robinson and miracles going to a go go. If you could post a vid that wud be great. It was a great help and i will discover the other songs ons your site.
She capos on two, but not the bottom E string, so you get a really nice bass run. I really appreciate your work Now a bookmark I visit every week All the best, Terry. Hello from Germany, Olli. First let me compliment you on this enormous body of work. I hope to be able to donate a small sum in the future. This is the best guitar site on many levels that I have seen. You put a lot of effort into to each one of your endeavors and I hate to make a request, but could you do one on that song please?
Thank you, I am a total noob , but I am beginning to make a little progress with the help of people like you…. Hello Alan…That Yesterday song by the Beatles…. I love watching Your Lessons and Am always ready for anything new you unleash…. Hi Edwin, the song is detuned by 2 frets 1 step as is the original. Just found you via youtube. Tough song for me with the frequent chord changes and chords I am not fluent with B flat, the particular F chord you used, and the D minor. The slow version was especially helpful.
I must make a google account to subscribe. I will try to remember your music shop as well. Thanks for the help. Best wishes for Alan, I have spent hours researching your teachings and learning the songs that suit me, provided by yourself also reading all the positive emails from above. Great work and you give me inspiration to learn the songs and new chord shapes. Fantastic work and effort. Thank you for your channel! My guitar was waiting about seven years for me to start playing.
I have never had anyone to show me how to do it. Really impressed step by step videos.. Would luv to see more country music.. Please advise how to resolve this issue.
Love your tutorials! Also schreibe ich in deutsch, ich wollte nur wissen wo Mann eine lern DVD von dir kaufen kann. A message to Alan Robinson. My name is Mauro and I follow your guitar lessons on youtube. Hey Alan man! New-ish guitar player here.
Just discovered your guitar tutorials on your YouTube channel. Could you clear this up for me. Hi Brian, thanks for your support mate — as far as I know the currency is defaulted to the country you make the donation from — I hope this helps. Hi Alan, Im very impressed with your singing and playing. I notice youve just started gigging with a covers band. I would like to do this as well. Have you any advice how to got about it as I dont know where to start. Thanks for your time Dave. Thank you so much for this.
If others appreciate it as much as I do, you are greatly to be thanked. Thank you Manish, that sound like a lot of fun; I wish I could join you. This website is the BEST!!! I dedicated this song to my sisters baby girl, born on the 4th of June , and would LOVE to be able to play it. You are the best I found online so far. Thank you Alan. Bonjour Vraiment bravo pour ce site, super, enfin un site qui donne envie de jouer.
Hi Alan, love your YouTube channel, fantastic selection of songs. I was wondering if you might share how you strum, from the videos it looks as though you just use your index finger! Really hate using a plectrum but not sure of best way to do it using fingers. Thanks for all your hard work. Hi Brian, I use a pick for most of my strumming, I hold it mostly in between my thumb, index and middle fingers but this does change to just my thumb and index finger occasionally for a few songs.
It really depends on what you feel comfortable with. The Doors — People Are Strange video I created is the only one I strum without a pick, because it combined finger picking. My name is Camila, I from Brazil.
Hey Allan! I just started playing guitar 2 months ago after my divorce… and your tutorials are a massive help for me!!! Thanx a lot!!! I was wondering if you can play more country songs to ,Till next time stay safe. You have the best guitar lessons on YouTube. The chord diagrams really help when trying to play along. Heck, you even have a few tunes by Travis, my new favorite band. Keep up the good work and look forward to any new videos.
Thank you for sharing tabs! This is my first time being on your site. Thanks for providing this tutorials. I recently started back into guitar after a long hiatus of 2 decades but, like riding a bicycle, you never really forget how…or the joy it brings. Thank you Marc, I appreciate your positive feedback and support. All the best. Hello, congratulations for the site, is too good,I loved it,I am a beginner on the gutiar. By the way; the song-sheet for that fantastic song Nights in white satin by the Moody Blues is missing as well.
It was a great concert with many bonus songs. Thank you very much therefore. I downloaded several of your tutorials in order to use them off-line on my calculator as well as the corresponding song-sheets for my daily guitar-exercise.
Will you uploaad this shortly? As a beginner in playing guitar I was very lucky to find one of my favorite songs A horse with no name by the Band America and the fact, that this song can be played with only two chord. And in order to play this wonderful song, I need a song-sheet, you know?!
Hi Im christian ….. Your video are really helping me to learn a lot of songs I like, mostly those one by Paul Welle, who I like very much. I want to thank you for your playing competence and your help, Keep on this way! Thank you soooo much!!! Merci de nous faire profiter de ton talent. Your site is vraiement Well, I knew you on youtube or I appreciate your work, thanks to you I can finally make a set of songs that I like.

Hi Al, I just hope you do more fingerstyle guitar, am not so good at fingerstyle and hope to supplement my practice with fingerstyle…. I Loved the Jeff Buckley cover………Have a lovely day…. Alan, I just had to say Thanks. You have many great songs that will keep me busy for a long time.
Just stumbled onto your Guitar site and checked out a few Vids. Great job from what I have seen so far. Been playing since I been 20 and now I am 61 and I do not come anywhere close to how you play. My problem is that I have no rhythm. I have to learn note for note. Even to play a simple song I have to listen to it before I can play it and it never sounds the same.
And I could never get anyone to help me over the years. So I have to learn everything one string at a time. And all I know is basic chords. I would like to say a lot more but it would take up to much time. But I would like to make a request seeing that you said that you would consider doing certain songs. Once person came close but still not right.
The strumming with the picking is absolutely awesome. He also has other great songs which I know that you will enjoy and maybe even do more. I know that you are swamped with requests , but this one could be a little changeling. So check him out and see what you think. And thanks for all the effort you have already put in.
